A remarkable renovation with vinyl flooring
"We are not normal people," says Sumeyya. "Don't get us wrong, but renovating this remarkable property would not be for everyone." With stylish Moduleo flooring in the bedrooms, the result is nothing short of impressive.
What a cosy bunch there during their visit to Oud-Turnhout, a small city near Antwerp in Belgium. Three great kids Ada, Sem and Koray; a workman taking care of the fireplace, an enthusiastic dog... "Only my husband is missing today, he recently found a new job and is now in London. So I lost my strongest work horse," laughs Sumeyya.
No love at first sight
The family bumped into this property by chance. "Some of the photos were really ugly. For some reason I responded to that ad anyway, a few weeks later an estate agent called me."
"Our previous house was a big property, which we renovated into a B&B. It was there that we realised that the life-work combination could be better. Preferably towards the countryside, in this region."
Not normal people
So the photos did not immediately create a wow effect. But then why did they choose this house? "I am an entrepreneur at heart. So I did renovations for other people, interior stylings; I am now an influencer..." And she then pulls off that hands-on mentality.
"Normal people don't buy this," Sumeyya chuckles. "We've been renovating for ten years without stopping.
"Still, it wasn't just a rational decision," says Sumeyya. "An architect's house is ideal with concrete, straight walls and therefore much less work. When I became interested in the property, I started researching. The property had a nice story and comes from the Turnhout School of Architecture."
Pleasant surprises
Often, many skeletons come out of the closet in a renovation of this magnitude, but here there were even some pleasant surprises. "For instance, we discovered a special insulation under the bedrooms, with grass mats. In addition, the ceilings in the bedrooms also already had some insulation, there is a cavity wall and even double glazing."
Vinyl is a perfect alternative
Let's talk floors! Why choose vinyl in the bedrooms and hallway?
"I really like concrete, but in bedrooms it's too chilly and wood is less easy to maintain. Carpet wasn't an option either, as I'm allergic to it myself." And so vinyl flooring came up as the best option, as it repels dust mites and dirt. "Vinyl is simply a very good alternative. So the perfect floor for renovation projects like this."
"Many people think vinyl doesn't really come close to wood, but that's absolutely not the case with Moduleo. That's because there is a lot of variety in the designs. For example, one room has almost all unique planks. In addition, it is very quiet and soft to walk on."
"I visited the showroom and quite quickly chose something timeless and neutral, which goes well with the furniture. They laid the floor in just two days."
"Isn't that real wood?"
Friends and family react surprised when they see the floor for the first time. "They think it's parquet. Which is nice, because with wood-look vinyl, you naturally want it to look real.
"We have the pleasure of wood, without the problems real wood can bring. Vinyl is much more maintenance-friendly, warmer and the price is also good. It’s not surprising, I have already convinced many people to choose vinyl."
With heart and soul
The house is "liveable" at this stage, but there is still some work to be done. " Heating comes next, and then the garden. After that, we will paint."
Sumeyya is rightly proud of the renovation. "We worked very hard and put our heart and soul into this. It has become something very special and the result is exactly like how I imagined it."
